The winter kit priority order
If you are building a winter setup from scratch, spend in the order that removes the biggest risks first: visibility, hands and core warmth, waterproofing, then repair backup.
- Lights: winter afternoons turn dark quickly, especially under trees or in rain.
- Reflective outer layer: drivers need to spot you before they are already close.

What to avoid buying first
Do not start with novelty winter gadgets if your basics are weak. Heated accessories, overspecific base layers and expensive bags are less important than reliable lights, a visible outer layer, mudguards, and a drivetrain that has been cleaned and lubricated properly.
If the bike has worn brake pads, sloppy gears or cracked tyres, fix that before buying more clothing. Winter makes mechanical problems show up faster.
Mechanic checks before winter commuting
- Check brake pad thickness and braking surface condition.
- Look for chain rust or stiff links after wet rides.
- Charge lights on a fixed routine, not when you remember.
- Keep one spare tube or patch kit with tyre levers in the bag.
- Book a service if the bike already skips, rubs or creaks before winter starts.
