Winter doesn't have to mean hanging up the bike. With the right preparation, you can ride comfortably and safely all year round. Here's how to set up your bike and yourself for cold, wet conditions.

Prepare your bike

Tyres

  • Run slightly lower pressure — 5–10 PSI less than summer for better grip on wet roads
  • Consider wider tyres — more contact patch means more grip
  • Puncture-resistant tyres — winter roads are full of debris. Schwalbe Marathon or Continental Gatorskin are excellent choices

Mudguards

Full-length mudguards are the single best upgrade for winter cycling. They keep road spray off you, your bike, and the rider behind you. SKS Chromoplastics or similar clip-on guards work on most bikes.

Lights

  • Front light: minimum 400 lumens for unlit roads, 200 lumens for lit streets
  • Rear light: flashing mode for daytime visibility, steady for dark roads
  • Charge regularly — cold weather reduces battery life significantly
  • Backup lights — a small clip-on light as a backup is cheap insurance

Drivetrain

  • Switch to wet lube — it stays on the chain in rain and road spray
  • Lube more often — every ride in wet conditions, or at least twice a week
  • Clean the chain weekly — road salt and grit destroy drivetrains fast in winter

Clothing essentials

  • Layers: base layer (wicking), mid layer (insulation), outer layer (wind/waterproof)
  • Gloves: windproof and warm. Lobster-style gloves are great for very cold days
  • Overshoes: neoprene shoe covers keep your feet dry and warm
  • Buff or neck warmer: pull it up over your face on the coldest mornings
  • Hi-vis: bright colours or reflective strips. Winter daylight is short

Riding in wet and icy conditions

  • Brake earlier — wet rims and rotors take longer to bite
  • Avoid painted road markings — they're extremely slippery when wet
  • Watch for ice — especially on bridges, shaded areas, and near water
  • Slow down on corners — reduced grip means less lean angle
  • Stay visible — assume drivers can't see you

Winter bike maintenance

Winter is the hardest season on your bike. Salt, grit, rain, and mud accelerate wear on every component. A few extra minutes of care makes a huge difference:

  • Wipe the bike down after every wet ride — 2 minutes with a rag prevents rust
  • Clean and lube the chain weekly
  • Check brake pads monthly — they wear faster in gritty conditions
  • Book a mid-winter service — catch problems before they become expensive
  • Store the bike indoors — even a dry garage is better than outside

Consider a winter bike

If you have a nice bike you want to protect, consider a dedicated winter bike — an older or cheaper bike set up with mudguards, lights, and puncture-resistant tyres. It takes the punishment so your good bike doesn't have to.

Winter service?

Get your bike winter-ready with a service. We'll check everything, swap to wet lube, and make sure your brakes and gears are set up for the conditions.
