Every spring we see the same thing: bikes dragged out of sheds untouched since October. Here's what a UK winter actually does to a neglected bike — and what it costs to fix.

The chain

Three to four months of cold and damp turns a dry chain orange. Surface rust is often removable, but rust inside the rollers and pins means the chain is stiff and needs replacing — and if left long enough, it'll have worn the cassette too.

Cables and housing

Gear and brake cables corrode inside their housing over winter. Outer housing can crack with temperature cycling. The result: stiff gear changes, brakes that don't return properly, or cables that snap when you first use them. One of the most common spring finds.

Brake pads

Rubber pads harden in cold weather. Pads that were marginal in October are often worse by March. We also regularly find grit embedded in pads from last autumn's wet rides — this acts like sandpaper on rims and rotors.

Tyres

Rubber degrades with age even indoors. Tyres left uninflated over winter can develop flat spots and cracking. Check tyre sidewalls carefully in spring — small cracks that appear when inflated mean the tyre needs replacing.

Bearings

Water gets into headsets and bottom brackets in unheated sheds. The freeze-thaw cycle pushes it deeper into the bearing races. The result: rough steering and a grinding bottom bracket — both more expensive than a service would have prevented.

What the typical spring rescue costs

  • New chain: £10–£25 + fitting
  • New cables and housing: £20–£40 + fitting
  • New brake pads: £10–£30 per pair + fitting
  • New tyres: £15–£50 each + fitting

A bike serviced before winter and stored properly might just need a clean and a lube check — a fraction of the cost.

How to store it better

  • Clean and lubricate chain before storing
  • Inflate tyres to correct pressure before storage
  • Store indoors — a hallway is far better than an unheated shed
  • If it must be outside, use a proper waterproof cover
