The M-Check: How to Do a Bike Safety Check in 5 Minutes
Published
Local Bike Mechanic — James Thornton, Staffordshire Moorlands & Cheshire East
The M-Check is a systematic way to check your bike before riding. It follows an "M" shape across the bike, ensuring you don't miss anything. It takes less than 5 minutes and could save you from a dangerous mechanical failure.
What is the M-Check?
Starting at the front wheel, you trace an "M" pattern across the bike: front wheel → front brakes → headset → down to the bottom bracket → up to the saddle → down to the rear wheel. Each point gets a quick check.
Point 1: Front wheel
- Tyre pressure: squeeze the tyre — is it firm enough?
- Tyre condition: any cuts, bulges, or embedded objects?
- Quick release / thru-axle: is it tight and secure?
- Wheel spin: does it spin freely without wobbling?
- Spokes: squeeze pairs of spokes — are any loose or broken?
Point 2: Front brakes and handlebars
- Brake lever: squeeze it — does it bite firmly before reaching the bar?
- Brake pads: are they aligned with the rim/rotor? Any wear left?
- Handlebars: stand over the front wheel and try to twist the bars — they shouldn't move
- Stem bolts: are they tight?
Point 3: Headset
- Play test: squeeze the front brake and rock the bike forward and back
- Any clunking? That means the headset is loose
- Smooth rotation: turn the bars side to side — any notchiness or grinding?
Point 4: Bottom bracket, cranks, and pedals
- Crank bolts: try to wiggle each crank arm — any play?
- Bottom bracket: spin the cranks — any grinding or roughness?
- Pedals: are they tight in the cranks? Do they spin freely?
- Chain: does it look clean and lubed? Any stiff links?
Point 5: Saddle and seatpost
- Seatpost: is it at the right height? Is the clamp tight?
- Saddle: try to twist it — it shouldn't move
- Minimum insertion mark: make sure the seatpost isn't extended past its limit
Point 6: Rear brake and gears
- Rear brake lever: squeeze it — firm bite?
- Gears: lift the rear wheel and click through all gears — smooth shifting?
- Rear derailleur: is it straight? Not bent inward toward the spokes?
Point 7: Rear wheel
- Tyre pressure and condition: same checks as the front
- Quick release / thru-axle: secure?
- Wheel spin: true and free-spinning?
- Reflector and lights: working and visible?
Riding after dark?
Your M-Check confirms the bike is safe, but visibility is its own job. See our guide to staying visible cycling in the dark for lights, reflective clothing and helmet-cover advice.
When to do the M-Check
- Before every ride — the full check takes under 5 minutes
- After transporting your bike — things can come loose in transit
- After a crash or impact — check everything carefully
- On a bike you haven't ridden recently
- On a borrowed or hired bike
