Road Bike Maintenance Checklist

Road bikes are precision machines. Keeping on top of maintenance means smoother shifts, better braking, fewer punctures, and a bike that's always ready to ride.
Before every ride (2 minutes)
- Tyre pressure: road tyres lose air fast. Check with a track pump before every ride
- Quick releases / thru-axles: make sure wheels are secure
- Brakes: squeeze both levers — they should bite firmly before reaching the bar
- Chain: does it look dry? A quick lube takes 30 seconds
Weekly (10 minutes)
- Wipe the chain: remove surface grit with a dry rag
- Lube the chain: one drop per link, wipe off excess
- Check tyres: look for cuts, embedded glass, or worn tread
- Wipe the frame: road grime is mildly corrosive over time
Monthly (30 minutes)
- Check chain wear: use a chain checker or the ruler method
- Check brake pads: look for wear indicators. Replace if worn flat
- Check wheel trueness: spin each wheel and watch for wobble past the brake pads
- Check bar tape: is it coming loose or worn through?
- Check bolts: stem, seatpost, saddle clamp, bottle cages
- Clean the cassette: floss between sprockets with a rag
Every 3–6 months
- Deep drivetrain clean: degrease chain, cassette, and chainrings
- Cable check: look for fraying, kinks, or sticky shifting
- Headset check: squeeze front brake, rock bike — any clunking?
- Bottom bracket check: remove chain, spin cranks — any grinding?
- Brake bleed (hydraulic) or cable adjustment (rim brakes)
